Lice… they are headed your way!!! Are you ready?

liceLast year I wrote a blog post about our first experience with lice in our house. This is serving as an update to that blog- you can  go here to read the first one…

Since that entry we experienced lice in a whole new level! I felt so smug because I thought we had conquered it with that first round. Then my younger daughter got it, THEN they came to me!(Then they came back again, TWICE!) When I found one on my head is when I drew the line and said I will do whatever it takes to get rid of these things. But what is one crunchy mama to do? I knew I wanted to stay away from the toxic stuff, and I wanted them gone. If you haven’t heard about the toxic chemicals and the trouble with them, here is the 411 on that. A chemical called permethrin is an insecticide and what is commonly used to eradicate lice. You have your average pediatrician and pharmacist saying these chemicals are NOT toxic, but  upon further research I chose to see it from a different perspective. Some sources say it is extremely toxic to dogs and cats, and less so to human. I find that hard to believe that animals can have a hard time with it, but we humans don’t.  The EPA is calling it a possible carcinogen. It really is just very confusing to know what is ok to use and not to use.

But then the inevitable happened. Everyone started using permethrin and all the lice got smart and grew resistant to that treatment. There was a study done recently by Kyong Yoon, PhD from  Southern Illinois University. What he discovered is that the lice are mutating to the chemical and the chemical treatment is no longer effective.“We are the first group to collect lice samples from a large number of populations across the U.S.,” says Kyong Yoon, Ph.D. “What we found was that 104 out of the 109 lice populations we tested had high levels of gene mutations, which have been linked to resistance to pyrethroids.” Look at this map, the red ones are the ones with the mutating lice… is your state on the map where the resistant lice are? Mine is! Dr. Yoon’s suggestion is to rotate what is used to keep the mutation to a minimum. Sounds a little like the resistant antibiotic problem happening amongst us. This honestly made it easier to not want to use the toxic chemical stuff.

Thankfully we found the natural alternative without the worry of the toxic ingredieints!!! And you are going to want to know about this to either have on hand or know where to go when these little sneaks come your way. I have a friend who has three kids and they all made it out of elementary school unscathed without lice and now her 7th grade middle schooler (how awful would that be) got it for the first time, so be on the look out!

  • Enter Fairy Tales Hair Care. This is a GAME CHANGER!!! Once we found this, they weren’t so hard to treat and I finally was able to keep them at bay.. (knock on wood:) The Lice Good-Bye mousse is nontoxic, easy to use AND it gets rid of the eggs like the toxic stuff can’t! The enzyme formulation allows the eggs to slip off the hair shaft by loosening the “glue” that the nits have  allowing you to  comb them out. It doesn’t kill the live bugs, but sure does make it easy to comb them out. There is still the tedious comb through process and sectioning the hair out. Honestly we limit TV time, but it was my friend last year during all the comb through as the girls got to watch an episode of Saddle club while I combed their hair. (if you have a tween daughter, Saddle Club ‘s old DVDs  might be worth the small investment:!) What was once a dreaded lice comb through became “sure mom, we can do another one if we can watch an episode of Saddle Club”
  • The comb they sell called the Terminator Nit Free comb is a must. Even if you don’t have lice, you might want to get their comb to use as a preventative or something you can use to check to see if your child has lice. This is the mac daddy of combs.Your best bet is to go with the Lice Good bye Survival Kit. where the comb and mousse come together.
  • While the lice continued to be a problem in our school, we would do weekly or at least twice a month comb through to check for any and treat preventatively.

Thankfully, we have avoided the infestation this year, but I reach to scratch my head as I type that! At least I know how to be prepared and it doesn’t seem so overwhelming now that I know about Fairy Tales Hair Care Products! We did combine our homeopathic psorinum in the mix, so together I think that did the trick!

Here is a great check list from Fairy Tales Hair Care to be prepared for THE REMOVAL of lice in your child’s hair and home.

And here are some tips from Fairy Tales about what to do once you are lice free:

Re-checking your child regularly and using prevention products daily are the most important things you can do

  • Check the “hot spots” nightly with the Fairy Tales Terminator Comb using Lice Good-Bye to spot check. Repeat for 7-10 days after an infestation. You can check every 2-3 days for lighter cases.
  • Rosemary Repel® products are proven to help prevent head lice. You can use them as your daily shampoo, conditioner and styling aid. Our ingredients cleanse, soften, detangle AND the natural oils of rosemary, citronella, tea tree, lavender and peppermint are proven safe, gentle and effective to help keep the bugs away.
  • Rosemary Repel® Conditioning Spray is the must-have to use EACH morning before school, preschool or day camp. Spray the entire head generously, as well as shoulders, neck, backpacks and insides of collars, hats, hoodies and hoods.
  • Keep long hair up in a ponytail or braid. Using Rosemary Repel® Hair Spray will coat the hair to secure the style and make it difficult for lice to attach. For shorter hair, try Rosemary Repel® Styling Gel. Great to spike it up, slick it back and help keep the bugs away.

Please be sure to share any comments below if you have found something that worked for your family to combat lice!

Pyrethoids: Not as Safe as You Think

Fluoride…Friend or Foe?

In an effort to protect children…

The lead in paint was deemed dangerous by the US  Government back in the 1970’s.  So they banned it from paint, and now it is required by law to say whether or not you think lead could be in your house if you are selling it in an effort to protect children. What they discovered was that lead is a neurotoxin and not safe, especially for children’s developing brains and bodies. Some pediatricians even check lead levels now as part of regular care to make sure toxicity is not an issue.

How did the lead get there in the first place and why did someone think it was OK to have lead in paint? It obviously made a better paint, but it was something that was once thought of as safe, but turned out to not be… and there are now repercussions as a result.

fluorideFluoride was the golden child of the 20th century. Look how modern we are that we can put something in our water to prevent tooth decay. But did anyone take a closer look at what fluoride was really doing to our bodies? Especially our children’s bodies. New studies are coming out everyday demonstrating its harmful effects to babies and children. Even some members of the  EPA are calling for no fluoridation in our waters. Most of our friends in European countries have chosen NOT to fluoridate their municipal water systems. There have been links to the increased incidences of ADHD and thyroid problems. ( I lose track of the people I know who are on thyroid medication!)  Yet, the people who have taken a closer look in the US at the potential dangers of fluoride get automatically labeled as anti-science, but the people who aren’t taking a closer look are adamant they are right and not open to discussion. I think in life we often discover things aren’t as great as they might seem and we have to shift our thinking. Education is experiencing a shift in thinking, as Obama recently announced the end of the  NO Child Left Behind era. It is even true in medicine… remember the horror stories of bloodletting, or even more modern day is Vioxx and it’s downward spiral. Maybe we are better off taking a closer look and examining an issue to see if there is a better way.

Last week, film maker Jeremy Seifert,  released a thought provoking documentary: Our Daily Dose on fluoride and its potential dangers to our kids.  It is only 20 minutes long, and it will be worth your time, I promise!

I myself have become convinced of the dangers and am doing everything in my power to keep fluoride out of our home. But if you are still unsure, do your own research. Some helpful places to start are here:

Fluoride Action Network

Moms Against Fluoride

So then what is one to do? First of all , educate yourself and make an informed decision about whether your family should consume fluoride or not. If you decide to consume fluoride, then you don’t need to do anything because there is plenty in our water, our toothpaste and most dentists advocate for its use. But if after educating yourself you find you want to avoid fluoride then here are a few tips!

  • Get a water filter for your drinking water. NOW , this can be tricky and confusing in and of itself too because how do you know which one is best? I have done a lot of research on this and have come to the simple conclusion you just have to trust your gut on this one. Do a little research to know what resonates with you in a filter that removes fluoride. Please note that simple filters like the Brita filter and even refrigerator filters don’t take out fluoride. Two on my list that do are Berkey Water Filters and Cuzn.
  • Buy fluoride free toothpaste. This is a little hard to find too, but with our beloved internet you can find almost anything. Tom’s of Maine carries a child friendly one. We like EarthPaste Lemon Flavor for our girls, but I think our favorite is Purely Heaven Essentials’ orange kid’s toothpaste. My 5 year old eats it when I am not looking!
  • Decide what you are going to do at the dentist ahead of time. We just found a dentist that doesn’t use fluoride, but before that we would bring our own toothpaste with us. And be careful with sealants that are recommended way too often these days, most of them have fluoride in them (and not to mention, BPA:(!!!)

Please feel free to leave comments about what filter you use or even what toothpaste you have used in your family that is fluoride free!

And do check out this podcast with Dr. Bob Johnson, DMD and his experience of coming to understand fluoride and its effects.

A few things "lagging"- jet lag and some reflections on our recent trip to England…

I recently visited England with my husband, Tom, where he was leading a retreat for some pretty cool folks who work with American teenagers in military families who live on military bases. I was the privileged one who got to tag along which allowed us a day visit to London, a quick trip to Oxford University and the home of CS Lewis (author of the Chronicles of Narnia series), and capped off with a delightful stay in an old country estate called Cloverly Hall. I loved pretending we were really staying at Downton Abbey.

I can easily admit I found myself in love with the English countryside and quaint villages with a town pub. I kept trying to envision what it was we could do to allow a family move across the pond.

A few things I observed about the English in my one week stay:

I loved stroking my new afternoon tea habit.

The word “squash” translates into juice or fruit juice (rather clever, I think).

The food is much higher quality in my humble opinion than in the US. Even the retreat center where we stayed put up this picture.

Insinuating that they are proactive in the GMO movement instead of  letting the government dictate how patrons get to know what is really in their food.

The Heinz Ketchup in the UK contains sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup.  You might have to pick your poison here, but I would prefer the sugar over the genetically modified mercury laden corn syrup.

Heck, even the yogurt I found at the grocery store was labeled” proper organic yogurt” from Yeo Valley Organic Farm. I kind of dig how they like to use the word “proper”.

The friends whom we visited told us of the compost pick up service that was just like garbage/recycle pick up. HOW COOL would that be- sure would cut down on the rats we invited when we had our own compost container in the back yard!

I was impressed with the better food choice overall, but sad to say many Englanders are heavy smokers which was rather unappealing!!!

The trade off, of course, with the good food and higher standards is the higher cost of living and cost of food in the UK. Might be hard for a family to eat well over there on lower living standards. Not sure how to reconcile all of that in my little brain, but thankful for the yummy food while we were there.

Ever feel JET LAG????

We really had an enjoyable time , even with the quick 6 day trip and 5 hour time difference. If you have ever flown to a different time zone, especially overseas, you know how sometimes jet lag or when the body’s circadian rhythm gets out of sync, can get the best of you. And particularly  if you are traveling with children, you will want to be prepared! I like to avoid the prescription and over the counter medicines simply because there are some great natural remedies that can help you combat jet lag and get the circadian rhythm back on track.  Here are some tips to get you ready to avoid jet lag!

  • Hydration is KEY! If traveling with small children especially. Take a pass on the sodas and high sugar juices and reach for the water instead. Even the days leading up to your trip, drink lots of water. There is a great remedy that I love called Quinton Isotonic that is really marine plasma. It is a game changer for me and my family. It might be hard to carry on a plane due to it’s glass vial, but it is excellent leading up to and in a checked bag for landing if you can make it happen. Drink, Drink and Drink water on the plane!
  • Most trips from US to Europe fly at night, be sure to sleep when it should be night.
  • Go ahead and change your watch to the new time zone upon entering the plane- lets your mind move forward.
  • Some magnesium spray can be helpful as well. I like the EASE magnesium spray by Activation Products. Magnesium helps one relax easier.  Just spray on abdomen, arms and legs. This can be safely used in children.
  • Allow your infant to either nurse or take a bottle on landing/take off.
  • Some folks have found essential oil use particularly helpful.
  • Homeopathy can make a dramatic difference in that stupor feeling. Helps reset the body’s rhythm. Some helpful homeopathic remedies include:
  • Arnica Montana 30C taken every couple of hours on the plane and on arrival
  • Nux vomica 30C – for when there is constipation and GI disturbance
  • Chamomilla 30C- can help alleviate stress, sleeplessness, anxiety, and disorientation
  • A cell salt called Nat Mur in the 6x potency. You can dissolve this in water and drink it that way OR let them melt under tongue. Nat Mur helps with water balance in the body.
  • A Great combination homeopathic remedy by KingsBio called Jet Lag and Shift Change (wishing I had had this when I did my night shift work as a young nurse). It is simply a spray that you can spray in your or your child’s mouth every so often to help combat the jet lag feeling.

If you want to learn more about homeopathy, be sure to check out my education page with a short video about homeopathy and cell salts,  or podcast interview with Joette Callabrese, and if you want to know how to use it in kids for common ailments, check out our online class: A Parent’s Guide to Natural Remedies: Everything you need to know to treat your child’s illnesses at home.

I would love for you to share tips on jet lag that you have found helpful in traveling with kids! Please share below what has worked for you and your family!

Until next time… safe travels!

Lice… and how to treat them naturally and effectively!!!

Have you looked for those creepy crawlers in your child’s hair?

I teach about natural remedies, and thankfully my kids prove to be great guinea pigs that I can test things out on. Kind of fun… but not so fun when one of them shows up with lice in her hair!

YIKES! I thought I had done everything to prevent it from happening in my house so to find these in my daughter’s hair was pretty humbling. But experience makes you a better learner and teacher.

You might come in contact with them sooner or later if your child is a child and if they attend school! Thankfully our experience didn’t last long, but it was tiring to say the least. Now I’m a new advocate for lice checking and good safe treatment!

What is lice and where do these creepy crawlers come from?

Head lice are parasites which are partial to humans. You can not get them from an animal. They are crawling insects and cannot hop, jump or fly.   They are small wingless insects which feed on human blood, which they need in order to survive. Lice in their full form are about the size of a sesame seed. Nits are the eggs laid by the female which then attach to the shaft of a piece of hair. This is what often makes it so hard to get rid of. The eggs or nits are glued to the hair.

Head lice can live about 30 days on a host and the female can lay up to 100 eggs or nits. When off their human hosts, lice will starve, and most will not survive for more than 24 hours off its human host.

How will I know if my child has lice?

Often itching is the first sign. Sometimes you might see little bites similar to mosquitoes around the base of the neck. Simple inspection can reveal the mature lice, but the best way to know for sure is to use a special lice comb to check.

What can be done to treat it?

Conventional treatment has you reach for a couple of different insecticide type shampoos: NIX (the chemical permethrin) and RID (the chemical pyrethrum).

Different places you look will tell you these are relatively safe , but this is where I have to step in and say they are not safe for children. Especially children who might be compromised in any way- be that a child who struggles with asthma, epilepsy, poor immunity or sensitivity to chemicals. Little bodies have a harder time detoxifying chemicals like these and there are no studies to show what the long term effects could be. A lot of these call for putting them on hair overnight in a showercap. That is a good 9-10 hours with a chemical on your child’s head- quite a long time for absorption. And the skin is one of the largest organs that absorbs chemicals. I would recommend avoiding the insecticide shampoos at all costs!

So WHAT can you do that is safe ?

Here is an ironic tale. When the lice showed up in our house, I was to teach a class on natural remedies a few days later and guess what? Lice was on the docket to be taught. How is that for timing! Thankfully I was a little in the know, but boy did I learn a lot more.

I chose not to use the harsh chemicals and go the natural route. My 7 year old sort of freaked out when she realized what was happening and what it meant. So I reached for a great homeopathic remedy to combat lice and frustrations.

The magic of Staphysagaria:

I gave it to her every 30 minutes for three doses the first night while we shampooed, and put a lot of things in the wash. If your child is susceptible to lice infestations there is another homeopathic remedy called  psorinum that you could use to break the cycle.

We also opted to use some essential oils in her shampoo. They included tea tree oil, lavender and eucalyptus oil. These create an environment that the lice don’t like. We simply put a few drops of each into the shampoo. Also we heated a little olive oil and coconut oil and put it on her hair overnight with a shower cap to suffocate any remaining critters. I hear mayonnaise is just as effectiveJ

The other magical tool?  The little metal comb. For the first 48 hours I was on it like stink on poop and combed her hair in little sections at least 3 times a day to make sure we didn’t have any more critters or nits left. After about 36 hours, we found no more critters OR nits! YAY! The comb helps mechanically remove the lice and nits. The nits are particularly tough to remove because they secrete glue that helps them latch on to the hair shaft. No insecticide or even shampoo can get the glue to loosen, only mechanical means can. We continued to use the comb daily and remained nit free.

What can be done to prevent it?

Some research has shown that a strong immune system keeps them away… so keep up the probiotics, goldenseal and echinacea for this. We do periodically use a few drops of the above mentioned essential oils in shampoo as well – but you can see we STILL got lice doing this. The best thing I have discovered and learned about is using the comb. We now own one, so I am going to use it every now and then to comb through my girls hair. It will do two things… 1) verify if they have lice or not because the comb will pull out any nits or lice bugs 2) it will prevent any egg infestation from growing as you can pull the eggs off with the brushing.

Give the gift of the comb…..

You can get them at most drug stores, but one resource that I have found invaluable during our ordeal is theLicemeister comb. You can check it out at and here is what they say about the comb “This tool has been tested on real kids with real lice by real moms. The LiceMeister® combing tool enables parents to screen regularly, detect head lice early, and deal with them as safely and effectively as possible”

The Dangers of Tylenol

Not as safe as we once thought

Not as safe as we once thought

What do you give at baby showers?

Envision the scene with me. It is a baby shower for a friend, and she opens my gift and it is a basket with infant’s Tylenol, Motrin and Mylicon. I hear the “what a great gift”  and the “ oh of course that is from a pediatric nurse”  “ great idea”. I sit back and feel proud of my thoughtfulness to give a mom something she would need in the first few months of her baby’s life.

Fast forward about 10 years, and now I am not so proud. Now I have come to a point where my token baby shower gift has changed. And I have changed. I no longer give or even recommend Tylenol, Motrin or Mylicon in my family or in my practice. I know many parents use these three over the counter medicines a lot, but let me explain why I have chosen to avoid them at all costs.

I’m going to target Tylenol specifically because it seems to warrant more danger than Motrin and Mylicon, but they are not without issue as well. More on that later.

There are four problems with Tylenol:

  • It is too easy to overdose and overdosing can cause liver failure or even death. Thankfully the packaging has changed so this problem is not as common as it used to be, but think about how easily this could happen. It is the middle of the night, your child is screaming, you reach for the Tylenol and misread the label and in your stressful state you give two dropperfuls instead of one. For a little one, this can be devastating. I have worked in children’s hospitals and seen the sad cases of liver failure and even death from a simple mistake of overdosing on Tylenol.
  • It can deplete a substance called glutathione in the body. Glutathione is an antioxidant that the body needs. So if you are already sick and need a little help detoxifying something, depleting your glutathione won’t help!
  • The extra ingredients. Take a minute to read through the inactive ingredients in Cherry flavored Infant’s Tylenol:
  • anhydrous citric acid, butylparaben, FD&C red no. 40, flavors, glycerin, high fructose corn syrup, microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose sodium, propylene glycol, purified water, sodium benzoate, sorbitol solution, sucralose, xanthan gum

EWWW. I can’t even pronounce some of them, let alone want to give them to an infant. But three concern me… the butylparaben, red no 40 and the high fructose corn syrup.

The jury might still be hung according to some on the paraben safety issue, but given that there is even a chance of estrogenic type activity and a possible association with breast tumors, I ‘m choosing to stay away, especially for little ones!

FD&C red no 40. Not sure if you have seen the latest on food dyes and the potential dangers for kids, but why would you want to give your child something that has the chance of a potential reaction- especially some sort of hyperactivity reaction when they are already feeling bad?

High fructose corn syrup. Well the companies that make this want you to believe that it is a safe form of corn and no harm will be done. I beg to differ. First of all most corn used to make high fructose corn syrup is genetically modified corn. Some people even have reactions to the corn after it has been genetically modified. But again another foreign substance a little bitty body has to process when it is already under a stress response.

  • There are have been some studies that have linked the use of Tylenol in kids to asthma. Some pulmonologists are even recommending no Tylenol, especially for the kids on the asthma train.

Tylenol suppresses a natural reaction:

Those are just the four major reasons I don’t like it. The true fifth reason is that it is suppressive in nature. It will suppress the fever, yes, and might make your child feel better for a little while. But let’s think about what the body was trying to do. When a fever comes on, it truly is a sign of “life” in the body. It means the body is doing what it was miraculously designed to do on its own- fight off offending pathogens on its own. If you suppress that mechanism, the body may fight back harder to make it happen. Hence another fever the next day maybe even feeling worse.

The Mylicon and Motrin (another name for Advil or Ibuprofen) have similar issues- too many “extra” ingredients and the potential for adverse reactions. There was a recent lawsuit against the makers of children’s Motrin where a child had a terrible reaction to taking Motrin while she was pretty sick.

Are the short-term, “band-aid” helpers worth long-term consequences?

So although Tylenol, Mylicon and Motrin  can help in the short term and help your child feel better for a little while, my conclusion is that it is not really worth all the negative benefits. Why not choose something that works with the body, like homeopathy, instead of suppressing what is happening?

So now my token shower gift is a copy of the  book Super Nutrition for Babies, by Dr. Katherine Erlich, and a Hyland’s Childrens Homeopathic Remedy kit. And I feel great giving these!

What is the one holistic remedy to always have on hand?

Quinton Marine Plasma.

Funny name, amazing remedy! It literally saved me one day. I left work not feeling well, a little dizzy, sore throat and a fever, not even sure if I could make it home. Thankfully I did make it home and took two vials of the Quinton Marine Plasma and went out to dinner that night!

But it’s not just for feeling run down.

It can:

  • Balance our internal fluids
  • Facilitate intestinal peristalsis, thereby addressing constipation
  • Clear toxins and support deficient adrenal, pituitary and thyroid function
  • Ideal for supporting recovery from fatigue, low energy, and other depressive states
  • Assist the body in reducing inflammation and supports the body’s ability to eliminate infections and parasites
  • Restore and open up suppressed methylation and metabolic pathways in the brain and nervous system
  • Improve absorption of other nutrients

Quinton Marine Plasma is the living fluid produced by dense fields of zoo-plankton as they consume smaller phtyo –plankton. In plain terms that is super cool minerals derived from plankton in the ocean. Discovered by the French Physiologist Rene Quinton (hence the name), this marine plasma has been used throughout the world healing people for over 100 years.

sea quinton

It is not just sea water, but a remedy full of the minerals that our bodies so desperately need. Quinton Plasma helps our bodies have the right terrain in order to fight off the bad germs. Kind of takes a different approach. Give the body the right environment and it will fight off the bad guys by itself like it was designed to do.

“The germ is nothing, terrain is everything.” – Claude Bernard (1817-1920)

There are two kinds, the isotonic and the hypertonic formula. The isotonic formula is one of those you want to have on hand for pretty much any illness. I usually stick with the isotonic as it is recommended for kids, the elderly population, and people with fragile immune systems or hypersensitive/allergic patients. Not only is it an oral rehydration tonic, it is great for fevers, sore throats, coughs, colds, eczema and it is a great overall calming remedy for kids. Have a child that is very restless at bedtime and or through the night? Try one to two vials a day over a week and begin to notice the difference in the demeanor.

The Hypertonic works best with athletes for refueling minerals after a workout.

This marine plasma is safe enough to use every day, but also great just to have on hand in event of an acute illness. Or even just to protect from illnesses, it would be beneficial to take 2-3 times a week. Take one to two vials in the case of an acute illness. It does have a salty taste, and to get kids to take it can be mixed in a little water or juice to disguise the taste. (Our family is partial to the Trader Joe’s Pomegranate Limeade)

Check out the Quinton website for more great info and how it has helped so many others.

This remedy is a little hard to find, as there are only a few places online that sell it. If you are having trouble finding it, please email and we can point you in the right direction.

Like Cures Like: Homeopathic Magic for Your Family

Homeopathy changed my life. I was struggling with my 18 month old daughter who had quit sleeping through the night, was showing quick meltdowns and having some strange GI issues. I had been to lots of different doctors in the area to get help and I got the “she’s fine”. After being a pediatric nurse for a long time, I knew in my heart something was off. That landed me at my neighbor, Susan Kramer’s, door step.

She has a homeopathic and herbalism practice in her home called Earthways. After having an appointment with her she gave my daughter what is referred to as a constitutional remedy. Within 48 hours this child was sleeping through the night again, temper tantrums were down and I had a new 18 month old. I was blown away. This wasn’t a placebo- this was an 18 month old who didn’t know that I had even given her a remedy. I was hooked, I never looked back, my husband gave me a homeopathic kit for Christmas that year and I was a woman on a mission. I started to learn what homeopathy was all about and it changed the way I saw how to use medicine. Now, give me an ailment and I will figure out how to help clear it up.

Homeopathy is a gentle and safe way to help the body do what it was designed to do.

It is based on the premise of “like cures “like”. Developed over two hundred years ago by a doctor named Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathy takes a substance noted to cause certain symptoms, dilutes it down over and over (even hundreds of times), and then in this diluted form it will cure what it causes.

Let’s say for instance, an onion can cause one to have teary eyes, runny nose or cold like symptoms. However, if taken in a diluted form it will cure the runny nose and watery eyes. The remedy is called allium cepa and it is derived from the common onion. It also has no known side effects and doesn’t interfere with any prescription meds. Another example would be the homeopathic remedy, RHUS TOXICENDRON. It is actually made the poison ivy plant. But in its diluted or homeopathic form, it can cure poison ivy.

One that is a must have on hand at our house is Belladonna.

Beautiful and helpful belladonna.

Just this week, both my girls came down with a quick onset of a fever and headache that took them to the bed. (isn’t this when we know they are really sick?) I gave both of them Belladonna just a few times (you give till you get better) along with an amazing remedy called Quinton Isotonic and some essential oils to the feet. SHAZAM they were both feeling back to normal the next morning and back to school.

I LOVE treating my family at home and watching them get better so fast!

There are thousands of remedies out there and various ways to use them. To keep it simple, know that common ailments like sore throat, common cold, headaches etc can be treated effectively, safely and gently at home. However if you are seeing issues on a more chronic basis, it is always advised to seek professional homeopathic help or an alternative type practitioner to be able to go a little deeper.

Can a Simple Salt Help My Family's Health?

Cell salts are one of easiest remedies to use at home, one of the most inexpensive, and completely safe for the whole family. They do not interfere with medications, they taste good (kids love them), and they are readily absorbed by your mucous membranes (and not the digestive system which is often faulty).

Cell salts, also known as tissue salts or mineral salts naturally exist in human cells and play a critical role in regulating cellular metabolism.

The health of a cell is critical to our overall health. In 1872 a German Homeopathic physician, Dr. William Schuessler, developed what has become known as the 12 Schuessler cell salts. Schuessler reasoned that an imbalance in these minerals was actually the cause of many diseases and maladies.  His findings determined that if this balance of minerals in the cell is upset, there can be a change in the state of immunity and resistance to microbes.  He also studied and catalogued various symptoms that can result from any cell salt deficiency.  These cell salts are homeopathically derived, allowing them to be a more bio-available form to the cell.

Modern lifestyles drain even the most health conscious person.

These much needed levels of mineral salts can be easily depleted through everyday stress, poor nutrition, anxiety, environmental toxins, exposure to heavy metals and contaminated drinking water.  I know of practitioners who use ONLY cell salts in their practice and have great success. The beauty of cell salts is their ease of use and kids love them. I never have a problem giving them to my daughters. You cannot harm yourself with cell salts.

Cell salts can really help the next time your family suffers from an ailment!

Take a look at this list below to see if you recognize any of these imbalances, and then use either of these methods to take them:

1) Dry method: tap 2-4 pellets or tablets into the cap and drop them into the mouth. Most children prefer this method due to the sweet taste.

2) Wet method: put pellets in clean water and consume throughout the day.

Acute cases take 2-3 pellets or tablets as often as every hour or two hours. Chronic cases take 2-3 pellets,   1- 3 times a day.

Can Essential Oils Cure a Cold?

Essential oils are very powerful tools and they have been around for thousands of years. They are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be found to be 50-70 times more powerful than herbs. Essential oils are great  natural alternatives to synthetic drugs and can be safely used at home to treat common illnesses and avoid multiple trips to the drug store  or the doctors’ office. Children and infants can benefit from them too!

So can an essential oil cure a cold? Yes, that and much more.

Here are some success stories from my practice:

One seven year old boy with chronic asthma issues requiring steroids, inhaler and nebulizer treatments particularly through the winter months. His mom chose to use several different eo’s (short for essential oils) and he required no steroids, no inhaler and had to use the nebulizer only 1 time during the winter season. Small investment for eo’s to have on hand, but think about the difference in cost of going to doctor, getting prescriptions filled, and not to mention the side effects of the drugs he would have had to take.

A child who has special needs including a sensory processing disorder. Mom chose to go the eo route and used them for calming. The child experienced much happier days, less stress and less sensory reaction issues.

Of course, these are anecdotes, but when you’ve tried everything else, or would prefer something that can, at worst, cause no harm, an essential oil can be a great tool in your body-healing shed, for both you and your family. For those interested in the medical literature, find many of the studies here. Especially noteworthy are the studies on Alzheimer’s and dementia – could we cure some of society’s ills with lavender oil?

Here are some other uses for essential oils:

Allergy issues: Try lemon, peppermint and lavender oil.

Stomach issues and heart burn: Reach for ginger, peppermint and lemon.

Canker sores: Try Maleluca or Tea tree oil.

Cold symptoms:  Reach for peppermint and frankincense.

You simply could do a medicine cabinet makeover and use essential oils for many issues you normally would make a trip to the drug store for.

There are a lot of different essential oil companies out there.  I have landed on two companies that I like for their quality manufacturing processes and certified therapeutic grade manufacturing. At Jubilee Health I use doterra oils for my patients. Doterra is a multi level marketing company, so you pay a membership fee, like at Sam’s or Costco to get them at wholesale price and then just use them for your family. I also like Mountain Rose Herbs, and you can simply order these online with no membership fee.

If you are interested in learning more, you might want to check out Pinterest, You tube and Face Book, and see what others are doing with their essential oils. I think you will be amazed.

Contact Jubilee Health if you are interested in ordering some to improve the health of your family.

Multi-vitamins: worth it, or not?

I get lots of questions at Jubilee Health about “what should my family be taking every day”, especially when it comes to a multivitamin. There are lots of different products out there and it is hard to know what is right.

Ideally, of course we would hope we wouldn’t have to take a multi vitamin if we had that full time chef cooking all of our food for us. But that is not happening.

And our soil is so depleted of many nutrients and minerals these days that a multi is not a bad idea.  A multi vitamin usually has vitamins AND minerals.  Our soil is especially depleted in minerals, and without minerals our body can’t be at it’s optimal health.  Minerals are they key in creating the catalysts for the enzymatic process so the body can utilize nutrients.  And sometimes we just want the insurance of getting the extra good stuff.

A few tips when choosing a multivitamin:

Does it come from real food? There are a lot of good brands who make it point to let you know their sourcing is from real or whole foods, not a synthetic form. Juice Plus is a good example of a real food vitamin. Vitamins that are synthetically made are hard for the body to process. Here is the hard part, a lot of words look good, but if written in the following manner, they are synthetic and you might do best to avoid these ingredients.

Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D)

d-alpha tocopherol

Folic Acid (B9)

Vitamin A palmitate

Riboflavin (B2)

Pantothenic Acid (B5)

Vitamin A palmitate

Also, choose capsules instead of tablets- as processing to make tablets can degrade the nutrients.

Kids gummies…. Most of them that I have seen have lots of added things to them to make them taste good for the kids. Yeah, you might can get them to take them easier, but they have a lot more to them that might not be helpful. Try opening a  capsule of better quality and hiding in a little applesauce or smoothie.

Avoid excipients and fillers. Simply read the label before you purchase. Excipients are binders, fillers, flowing agents and “glues” that are often non-nutritive substances used in nutritional products. There are several that are probably best to avoid: propylparabens, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, sodium benzoate, methylparaben, FD and C red #33, polyethylene glycol and methacrylic copolymer.

After the human genome project it was found that there are some people who  have a genetic polymorphism called MTHFR-( yes, you read that right – it stands for methytetrahydrofolate reductase). If one is positive for this genetic defect it can mean that you have trouble converting folic acid to a usable form in the body.  The folic acid added to most over the counter supplements is a synthetic form, not to be confused with good folate-rich foods like spinach. With that in mind I recommend buying a product that has a broken down form of folic acid and you will see the words like folinic acid, or 5-methatetrahydrofolate. The two best ones that I know of are Dr. Rons Multi and PRL Daily One.

One of the best supplements you could introduce your family to is cod liver oil . My favorite is Green Pasture (see below). There are others; please contact Jubilee Health for more info. This is one of the best food “supplements” out there. It is not heat or chemically treated, it is made by a traditional process thus leaving all the vitamins, enzymes and minerals intact. (hello incredible multi vitamin!) It is one of the best REAL sources of vitamin A, vitamin D and EPA and DHA! Both my girls were sick this week, and guess what I realized? We had been out of our cod liver oil for a while.
